The Sumpter Valley Rail Road Depot

  • The Depot is the western terminus of the Sumpter Valley Rail Road.
  • It received it’s first train on June 16th . 1910
  • The train arrived once a day for a trip over the mountains to Baker City.
  • The depot remained in use until 1933, when the SVRR quit coming to the station, unable to compete with increasing automobile trafic from Baker.
  • After the heyday of the rail road, the depot served as a residence for many years but was eventually abandoned.
  • The building became public property in the 1980s when it was rennovated and became the home of the fabulous DeWitt collection.

Train Depot

On the National Parks Historic Register, the depot was the only train station to serve the John Day Valley from 1910 to 1933

Museum

The museum host the fabulous Dewitt Collection. Artifacts from the late 18th and early 20th century.
